Wet belts, also known as "wet cambelts," are a vital component found in some engines responsible for synchronizing the top and bottom of the engine. Unlike traditional timing belts, wet belts operate within the engine oil meaning the rubber will degrade with time.

While timing chains are durable and don't require replacement, rubber timing belts degrade over time, necessitating periodic replacement to prevent catastrophic engine failure that could cost thousands.

In recent years, many vehicle manufacturers have adopted wet cambelts, which operate within the engine oil. However, this unique design poses challenges as oil can degrade rubber, leading to premature belt failure before the manufacturers change interval.

Ford Ecoboost engines:
Full wet belt service from £1399

On the Ecoboost engine, a wet belt replacement is a 2 day job that encompasses additional repairs and replacements:

Remove the oil sump to clean out any rubber blocking the oil pick up.
Replace the oil pump drive belt.
Replace the water pump O ring (which is prone to fail).
Replace the crank seal.
Replace the all important thrust washer.
Replace the Crank pulley bolt and multiply the torque to the correct Ford manufacturer specification.
Once complete we also carry out a Oil and Filter change.

Ford Ecoblue Engines:
Full wet belt service from £1499

On the Ford Ecoblue engine a wet belt replacement is a 2 day job that encompasses additional repairs and requires special tooling to ensure the flywheel is locked in place while carrying out the work:

Remove the sump to replace the oil pump drive belt.
Replace the sump.
Replace the timing belt cover with a new crankshaft seal.
Replace the timing belt and tensioners.
Once complete we also carry out a Oil and Filter change.

PSA 1.2 Engine:
Full wet belt service from £899

The PSA group 1.2 engine the belt replacement is a lot quicker as a 1 day job as there are less parts to remove but this does have to be done more frequently:

Replace the timing belt window gasket
Replace crank pulley bolt, Replace crank pulley seal,
Remove rocker covers for specialist locking tool
Replace rocker cover gasket.
Once complete we also carry out a Oil and Filter change.

Honda 1.0 Engine:
Full wet belt service from £1399

The Honda group 1.0 engine wet belt replacement is a 2 day job that encompasses additional repairs and replacements:

Oil and filter replaced – in effect a value service.
Sump removed, oil pick up inspected for debris and cleaned if required.
Oil pump drive belt replaced.
All associated gaskets replaced.
Timing cover resealed with new sealant
Rocker cover gasket replaced.

The recommended replacement intervals

While manufacturers recommend replacing wet belts every 10 years for Ford Ecoboost engines, and every 6 years for Ford Ecoblue or PSA group engines, we advise earlier replacement to minimise the risk of failure. Our proactive approach to maintenance helps protect your engine from costly repairs and ensures continued reliability.

These wetbelts are no reason to be put off any engine they work in. They are all fantastic engines and hugely popular but we do recommend they are replaced a little early by a team who know what they are doing in this very specialist field.
