The key element in starting your vehicle, the battery sends power to the starter motor which turns the engine over and provides the necessary ignition to fire into life. Whilst you are driving, the alternator takes over in supplying the electrical system of the vehicle and in turn replenishes that battery keeping it fully charged.

Vehicle batteries do not last forever.

They deteriorate gradually over time, cold mornings and frost speeds this up, reducing the capacity of the battery and its ability to be the vehicles power source. Checking the health of your battery is a very quick preventative maintenance tip that can save you getting caught out with a vehicle that won't start.

How long does a battery last?

There is no straightforward answer to this. Some batteries can last 20 years, while others may fail within a year. Batteries are made up of many cells, and if one of those cells fails, the entire battery will likely fail.

Our top tip for maintaining battery health is to keep the battery charged when the vehicle isn’t being used, as this helps prolong its life. At Fresh Motors, we recommend using CTEK battery chargers for vehicles that are not in regular use.

Can the battery be tested?

Yes. Like many garages, at Fresh Motors we have a battery tester that can test multiple types of batteries. However, don’t be fooled by a quick test. Many garages test your battery on the spot, but this is actually an incorrect method. Batteries must be fully charged before testing; otherwise, the results will be inaccurate.

Is there a way to make the battery more healthy and last longer?

The best way to maintain your battery’s health is by keeping it on a charger when the vehicle isn’t being used. At Fresh Motors, we recommend using a CTEK charger, as these have set procedures to help maintain battery health. The worst thing you can do with a car battery is let it go flat and lose its charge.

My car bulbs have never blown, is there a reason for this?

Very rarely is there a mechanical reason for bulbs to blow. We do find that cheaper brands can fail more quickly than premium brands, such as Philips. Also, be careful when handling bulbs, as you shouldn’t touch the glass with your fingers. The natural oils on your skin can cause the bulb to fail faster when it heats up during use. Our top tip is to use a cloth or rag when installing the bulb to keep the glass clean.
