The Exhaust System

A healthy working exhaust system is critical to the engine combustion process, ensuring toxic emissions are kept to a minimum protecting your health and the environment. The exhaust and its component parts help to clean emissions generated from combustion ensuring the gaseous waste emitted is safe and within regulation. Emission control is a requirement for an MOT test, through visual inspection and using the exhaust gas emission test your system is examined to ensure it operates within predefined parameters to pass.

Common exhaust issue signs

Roaring or chugging noise

Roaring noise could be a sign your silencer needs attention, moisture and condensation pooling can cause the silencer to corrode from inside out. Chugging noise might be an indication you have a blockage in your exhaust system.

Hissing or blowing

Most commonly the symptom of a hole in your exhaust pipe or manifold from environmental corrosion. It could be you have a leaking gasket that is allowing exhaust gases to prematurely leak out.

Rattle

The noise could be quite loud and unusual, likely the bouncing of exhaust components against the vehicles underside, indicating an issue with the support brackets, mounting or clamps that secure your exhaust system.

Soot or smoke

Accumulation of black soot around your exhaust tips or expelling of dark smoke is a common sign your exhaust system has excess soot which isn't being captured and burnt by your particulate filter or could indicate a blockage.

Warning Light

Illumination of the engine management, exhaust or diesel particulate filter light. These dashboard warnings could be early signals your exhaust system isn't operating within parameters efficiently or safely.

Regeneration can save you money!

Your catalytic convertor or Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) can become blocked, reducing the performance of your engine.

The catalytic convertor helps clean the toxic emissions such as carbon monoxide through serials of chemical reactions to carbon dioxide and water. Unburn fuel can cause carbon to accumulate, drastic changes in temperature can even damage the honeycomb structure inside, reducing the efficiency of the catalytic convertor in doing its job.

The DPF captures and stores soot which is a biproduct from diesel combustion. This eventually gets burnt through natural regeneration when using your vehicle. However too much soot can cause your DPF to block, sometimes short journeys in a diesel vehicle can be a common contributor to a blockage.

Should the accumulation be too much for natural regeneration, we have the equipment to complete the regeneration for you, simulating running your vehicle at high temperatures to burn off the excess soot and restore your system to an efficient working state.

If left untreated the build up of carbon soot can be too much to clear and a new DPF or catalytic convertor can be the only option. which can be very expensive, regeneration is an inexpensive preventative maintenance job which can save you an unnecessary expense.

Do I need to replace all my exhaust?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The answer really depends on the condition of the exhaust. Exhausts are made of metal and hang under the vehicle, so over time they can corrode. Exhausts are usually made in sections—front, middle, and rear. If only one section is corroded, we recommend saving money by replacing just the failed section.

What is an DPF?

A DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is a larger filter located within your exhaust system. Every diesel vehicle from 2010 onward will have one. DPFs are designed to reduce harmful particles produced during diesel combustion. While the engine is running, the filter collects these particles—commonly known as soot. Once the filter is full, it undergoes a regeneration process. This is a chemical process where the filter uses very high heat (up to 1000°C) along with fuel to burn off the collected soot. For this process to work properly, the filter needs to get hot. Problems can occur if the vehicle is only used for short journeys or isn’t driven hard enough. One simple way to check if your DPF has failed is to look at your exhaust tailpipe. If it’s very black, the DPF is likely allowing soot to pass through. What is an SCR?

An SCR is your AdBlue catalytic converter. This is the section of your exhaust that uses liquid AdBlue to reduce NOx emissions. Some vehicles never need this replaced during their lifetime, but in other vehicles, we have seen them fail, causing engine warning lights to appear on the dash. Can you weld my exhaust?

In short, maybe. At Fresh Motors, we can weld, and our technicians are very skilled, but it really depends on the condition of the exhaust.
