How do I know when to change my clutch ?

Normally the clutch is changed when it starts to go wrong, feedback or noise from the vehicle is a good indication of this. A clutch has a shelf life and will need replacing depending on distance travelled or months in use, this differs between manufactures, driving style and wear stress.

The most common signs of a clutch might need replacing are:

Soft or spongey clutch pedal
Trouble staying or selecting gear
Grinding sound when changing gears or releasing the clutch pedal
Clutch pedal getting stuck

If your clutch fails you won't be able to select gears.

How long should my clutch last?

This really depends on how the vehicle is driven and the type of use it gets. For example, a small Focus doing mostly motorway miles may reach 20,000 miles on one clutch, whereas a vehicle towing a heavy trailer around town will wear its clutch much faster. If the driver is gentle with the clutch pedal, there is no reason an average clutch can’t last 80,000–100,000 miles. How much is it to replace my clutch?

We are more than happy to provide a specific price for replacing your clutch, but costs vary from vehicle to vehicle, so we cannot publish a set price. Generally, the clutch kit itself is reasonably priced, while the more expensive part is the flywheel. The flywheel isn’t always needed, but it often is.

Should I replace my flywheel at the same time?

Vehicles have two types of flywheels: solid and dual-mass. As a general rule, dual-mass flywheels usually require replacement when their internal mechanism develops issues, while solid flywheels are normally fine. Occasionally, some solid flywheels may need skimming to remove hot spots, but full replacement is uncommon. The main reason to replace a flywheel during a clutch replacement is that the mechanic is already working in the same area, so there is minimal extra labour required—only the cost of the additional parts.

My pedal drops to the floor and doesn’t come back up? Does it need a new clutch?

It might. When a clutch pedal drops to the floor, it usually indicates an issue in the hydraulic system—either the master or slave cylinder. Occasionally, the fault can be with the clutch itself, but this is less common. One thing is certain: a dropping clutch pedal is not normal and will require repair.
