You are ultimately responsible for maintaining your tyres, checking for damage with sufficient legal tread depth, condition and pressure, to not compromise on the safety of you and other road users.

What makes a tyre dangerous ?

Tyre wear through general mileage and perishability, the rubber also degrades with age over time, which can result in tyre cracking.

Road surface and driving styles

Road surface and driving styles, impacts from potholes, uneven road surfaces and curb edges can often remove chunks from the sidewall of a tyre. Emergency breaking can create uneven tread wear.

Poor alignment

Poor alignment can cause uneven tyre wear, leading to wandering or dragging vehicle handling, reducing lifetime longevity of your tyres and compromising on fuel consumption.

Tyre inflation maintenance can help improve the longevity of your tyres. Often tyres can become underinflated if not checked regularly compromising on road safety.

Tyre replacement and balancing

In most cases we can supply and replace your tyres the same day, working in partnership with a number of the UK's largest suppliers stocking a vast range of tyre brands and sizes at competitive prices, to get you back on the road as quick as possible.

As part of tyre replacement we replace your tyre valves with new ones. Tyre valves hold the air pressure in your tyre, the stem can degrade over time often causing leaking and air loss reducing the inflation of your tyre, we simply don't take this chance and replace all tyres with new valves.

As part of the tyre changing process the new tyre is balanced. Our wheel balancing equipment uses laser technology with pinpoint accuracy can determine the location of wheel weights, providing precise wheel balancing for your new tyres, ensuring you have a smooth drive.

If your tyre is loosing pressure it may be you have a puncture, an easy solution to fix a puncture can be through a repair, providing the puncture is repairable, the repair can be a quick cost effective way to solve the air loss.

Can I get my alloys welded?

Some alloy wheels can be repaired, but it depends on the size and nature of the damage. If the wheel has a crack on the inside edge, it can often be repaired. However, a crack on the outside face or a hole usually cannot be repaired safely. At Fresh Motors, we don’t carry out alloy welding ourselves, but we do have trusted suppliers who can. Can I get my alloys refurbished? How much is it?

Alloy wheels can be refinished. They are typically either painted or have a diamond-cut finish. The cost usually varies from around £60 to £120 per wheel, depending on the size and the type of finish.

How long will my tyres last?

There is no straightforward answer to this. The life of a tyre will vary depending on the type of tyre and how it is used. Budget tyres don’t last as long as premium brands, and short town driving will wear tyres more quickly than steady motorway driving. In our experience, tyres can last as little as 8,000 miles or as much as 50,000 miles. If you are concerned that your tyres may need replacing, don’t delay—get them checked.

What is the legal limit for treat depth in the UK?

The minimum legal tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm for cars and vans. Larger vehicles, such as lorries and buses, have a minimum tread depth of 1mm. It’s worth noting, however, that your stopping distance in wet conditions increases significantly below 3mm of tread. At Fresh Motors, we recommend replacing your tyres once they drop below 3mm. It’s important to remember that your tyres are the only contact your vehicle has with the road—they play a crucial role in keeping you safe.

Do I need to get winter tyres?

That really depends on how much driving you do in very cold temperatures. Winter tyres are most effective below 7°C, so if you’re not often driving in those conditions, they may have limited benefit. You will also find that winter tyres can overheat in normal conditions, which causes them to wear more quickly. In the UK, we don’t feel there is a huge need for winter tyres, but all-season tyres are a great year-round option. These tyres perform well in both summer and winter conditions. They don’t require extremely low temperatures to be effective and won’t wear prematurely in warmer weather—offering the best of both worlds.
