The MOT Test

A Ministry of Transport (MOT) test checks the safety and roadworthiness of your vehicle and ensures it meets the minimum standard set out by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency, an MOT is a legal requirement for all vehicles over 3 years old.

Class 4

The most common category including cars up to 12 passenger seats, 3-wheeled vehicles over 450kgs, caravans, service vehicles such as taxis and goods vehicles with designed gross weight up to 3,000kgs.

Class 5L

Private passenger vehicles with 13 or more seats typically minibuses, playbuses and ambulances, limited to designed gross weight 5,000kgs.

Class 7

Typically commercial vehicles with designed gross weight between 3,000 and 3,500kgs.

When is my MOT due?

A valid MOT certificate lasts for 12 months, it is against the law to drive your vehicle on the road without a valid MOT certificate.

You can check the due date of your MOT by visiting the .gov website, or alternatively get in touch and we would be delighted to assist.

It is important to plan and prepare for your MOT and not leave it to the last minute, this will help avoid any unnecessary delays in using your vehicle whilst we complete any mandatory repairs in order to pass the MOT.

Here's some answers to the most frequently asked questions by our customers

When can I MOT my car?

You can MOT your vehicle whenever you like; however, to maintain the same expiry date it currently has, you can have it tested up to one month before it is due to expire. This will give you a maximum of a 13-month MOT. The expiry date can be found on your last certificate or on the government website.

Can I get a reminder for when my MOT is due?

I’m afraid the government system doesn’t provide reminders for when your MOT is due, but we can remind you at Fresh Motors. As long as you’re happy for us to do so and we have your contact details, our system will send you an email and text message when your MOT is due—making it hard to forget.

Can I still take my car if it fails?

If the vehicle fails, we cannot stop you from taking it, and your old MOT may still be valid for a short time. However, you must be careful, as you would be driving a vehicle on public roads with a known defect. In the eyes of the law, this could get you into serious trouble, so we would never risk it. The only time you can legally drive a vehicle without a valid MOT is when you are taking it to a pre-booked MOT appointment at a testing station.

Will warning lights fail my MOT?

Some vehicles will pass, and some won’t, but the majority will. It also depends on what the warning light is indicating. For example, if the tyre pressure warning light is on because the pressure is low, the vehicle may pass with advisories (under 2026 regulations). However, if the tyre pressure light is on due to a fault in the system, it will be a failure. Any sort of engine management light or emissions warning light will result in a failure.

How early can I MOT my car?

You can MOT your vehicle at any time during the year. However, if you want to maintain your current expiry date, the vehicle must be tested within 30 days of that date.

My car is very smoky; will it still pass its MOT?

This really depends on the vehicle and its age. Every vehicle has a smoke limit set by the manufacturer. As a general rule, the older the vehicle, the smokier it is allowed to be, while newer vehicles need to be cleaner. This is because newer vehicles have advanced emissions systems that reduce smoke and improve air quality. If you are concerned about your vehicle’s smoke level, please speak to our friendly service team, who will be more than happy to test it for you.
