Air conditioning sometimes referred to as air con or AC, is a refrigeration system within your vehicle that allows you to cool the interior air of the cabin ideal in hot weather, providing a cooler environment for you and your occupants.

Your air conditioning might not be used all year round, but the system and filter do require routine servicing to ensure working order and importantly certify healthy air which is safe for you and your family to breathe.

When should I service my air con?

Preventative maintenance is always the best policy to avoid any unnecessary repair bills, it is recommended your air conditioning system should be serviced every 2 years. The following are the main indicators you might have a fault or issue with your air conditioning system.

Blowing warm air is an indicator a recharge could be needed or weak airflow there might be a leak in the system, loosing pressure.

Noises, rattling or hissing, components of the air conditioning system such as the condenser could be in need of repair of replacement.

Bad odour or smell, growth of bacteria and fungal spores, leading to airborne infections, in need of a disinfectant and clean.

Condensation, generated from a blockage which can leave your vehicle damp.

My AC worked last year, why doesn’t it work now?

Chances are the system has a leak. The AC system in your vehicle works the same way as a fridge at home. It uses refrigerant gas that gets compressed and then cooled to produce cold air. If this gas leaks out, the system will shut down and stop working.

The reason your fridge rarely needs re-gassing is that it’s unlikely to be damaged by stones or other debris, and it’s always on, meaning the gas is constantly circulating. In a vehicle, the system isn’t used continuously, so the rubber seals can dry out, shrink, and develop leaks. The exact point of failure can vary. The most common issues are a damaged condenser or broken seals, though compressor failures aren’t unheard of.

Why does my AC smell?

Normally, this is caused by a build-up of bacteria. AC systems are often damp, which provides an ideal environment for bacteria to grow. At Fresh Motors, we recommend using our antibacterial cleaner once a year to clean the system. The cleaner costs just £20 and is very easy to use. We can apply it for you, or you can do it yourself.

Is the antibacterial cleaner a good idea?

Yes, AC systems are normally damp, which provides an ideal environment for bacteria to grow. At Fresh Motors, we recommend using our antibacterial cleaner once a year to clean the system. The cleaner costs just £12 and is very easy to use. We can apply it for you, or you can do it yourself.

Why is there 2 different re-gas prices?

AC gas is very harmful to the environment, so over time, new versions of the gas have been developed to make them less damaging. Today, we primarily see two types of gas used: R-1234yf (new) and R-134a (old).

R-134a is the older gas, normally used in vehicles manufactured before 2015, and it is the cheaper of the two to purchase. R-1234yf is the newer gas and is more expensive. Unfortunately, you cannot switch between the two gases, as the system is designed to use only one type.
