Wet belts, also known as "wet cambelts," are integral components found in modern vehicle engines, responsible for synchronising the top and bottom components of the engine. Unlike traditional timing belts, wet belts operate within the engine oil, which presents unique challenges and considerations for maintenance and replacement.

Due to exposure to engine oil, heat and other environmental factors, wet belts are subject to degradation more so than a standard cambelt or timing chain. This degradation can weaken the belt's integrity and lead to potential failure, which poses significant risks to engine performance and longevity. 2026 update: wet-belt recalls and the move away from belt-in-oil engines

Wet belts have remained firmly in the news since this article was first published. The most significant controversy surrounds Stellantis’ 1.0- and 1.2-litre PureTech petrol engines, used across a wide range of Peugeot, Citroën, DS and Vauxhall models. Premature wet-belt degradation has been linked to oil-pressure problems, excessive oil consumption and, in some cases, serious engine damage.

In 2025, Stellantis opened a customer support and compensation platform for affected UK owners who had already paid for eligible repairs linked to previous-generation PureTech engines. The support covered certain cases involving excessive oil consumption and/or oil-pressure problems resulting from premature timing-belt degradation.

The wider industry response has also been telling. Stellantis has begun moving newer versions of the 1.2-litre engine away from the oil-bathed belt design and towards a conventional timing chain, while the PureTech name appears to be being de-emphasised on newer European model listings. Fleet operators, meanwhile, have been warned that wet timing belts remain a risk across a range of cars and vans from several manufacturers, particularly vehicles built from the early 2010s onwards.

The practical takeaway has not changed, but it has become more urgent: if your vehicle uses a wet belt, stick to or beat the manufacturer’s latest replacement interval, keep on top of oil changes using the correct specification oil, and do not ignore early warning signs such as oil-pressure warnings, engine management lights, unusual noises, misfires, loss of power or debris found during servicing.
